The Mellon Foundation’s program entitled "Cost-Effective Uses of Technology in Teaching" (CEUTT) supported studies gauging the costs and pedagogic effectiveness of using instructional technology in higher education. The goal was to help address whether, and under what conditions, such technology might be deployed in ways that reduce institutional costs and promote pedagogic gains. Under this program the Foundation supported the assessment of existing instructional technologies by teams of experts in pedagogic assessment, cost measurement, and instructional technology. Starting in 1996, twenty-five projects were funded at universities around the US, with one project in South Africa; the program accepted the final proposals in January, 2001.
